Title tag is a secret weapon for SEO ranking. Generally, we tell to search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) that what page is all about. Search engines show this on the SERP (Search Engine Result Page) which is clickable for users. I am sharing here some SEO rules for title tags which helps to get higher ranking on Google or other search engines (Bing, Yahoo). Title tag is also know by “page title” and “meta title“.
See example of meta title in the search snippet.
You can find your title tag in website head section. You can see it by view source and from title bar from the top.
See example (syntax) of HTML meta title (Meta Title Format)
<head> <title>Here is your web page title tag</title> </head>
Right click on the web page and then select view source from the menu
and check your meta title in html form.
Title tag should be relevant on the web page, don’t try to misguide Google, otherwise Google may take strict action. Make sure every word in title should be available in the content with some details.
Meta Title tag length neither should be “too small” nor “too large”. Title Length should be 55-60 characters with space for Google SEO 2019.
Let’s see a live example, why this limit?
# Experts say that Google takes 512 pixel for title that’s why sometime your title may be taken less characters 50 around and sometime more characters 65 characters around. So don’t be surprise when you see different characters limit than standard limit.
There is MOZ tool where you can check title length
You can see title length in MS Word file.
WordPress website owners can check your title length by Yoast.
# Don’t take small title length, there is no objection by Google for small length but users want some more information and you can also add some extra word or keyword variations and target more keywords.
#. My recommendation is finish your keywords within 55 characters.
Where to put your keyword in meta title to get higher ranking that is a good question. We should place our main keyword in left hand side because left to right keyword value become poor for Google SEO ranking. Google gives more priority to left hand side keyword rather than right hand side keyword.
So if you are going to target more than one keywords on a single page then put high search volume keyword in left hand side and low search volume keyword in right side.
In the above example, you can easily understand why 4 number getting 4th position because he added main keyword in right side area. Although other SEO factors also responsible for position.
Too many keywords in meta title is not a good idea. My recommendation is target only one main keyword for one page. You can add some keyword variations with in 55 characters limit.
# Always write Meta title in Title case. It can help you to increase clicks on SERP. First letter of every word should be in capital letter.
# Use Numbers in Meta Title, it helps to improve CTR (Click-Through Rate). Users more click than normal title. You do not need to use capital letter for stop words (on, in, for, with, of etc.)
# Use Call to Action word in the title to improve CTR only if you have extra space in the title. Make sure you are adding this text at the end of the title.
# Use impressive words in title tag like “proven methods”, “secret weapon”
There are so many tips for writing a impressive title to improve CTR.
Here are in-depth blogs about them
There are many Title generators available on the net. You can also take help to make impressive and powerful title.
Some Title Generator tools
Google do not consider symbols, trademarks as ranking signal so not need to add these things in the title.
Although Google said that symbols looks Spammy.
So avoid emojis and tricky symbols, Google may be consider them as a spam and misleading.
You can use simple symbols like hyphen, underscore, dot, colon, semicolon, brackets, exclamation mark, question mark.
Generally Google ignore symbols including trademark symbol for ranking – Google’s official Statement
is, are, am, on, of, for, with, to, etc are stop words, Google don’t have any problem but Google ignores them so don’t waste space by using them in the title tag. Make sure they are not damaging the meaning of the sentence.
See example, how you can save space in title:
Band name in title tag is fine for google.
My recommendation is use brand name in title tag for home page at the starting and rest of pages at the end.
Use space between brand name is a good idea at least for home page because without space you can easily get rank.
I did this experiment with a website and improved little ranking.
Title tag is a ranking factor, not sure it is major or minor. Google is smart now a days, Google find page title even you don’t use title tag but not sure how much it will relevant.
If you do not use it. You may loss ranking or google may confuse what is your page about. So you must use it.
But the question is suppose if I do not use title tag then what will happen? How Google handles this situation.
Google pick website heading to show title tag on SERP.
If heading does not exist then pick sub-heading.
If sub-heading does not exist then pick bold, italic text.
If bold-italic text does not available in the website then it may pick title tag for SERP from normal paragraph content. That’s why in these days – title tag is not very major ranking factor as 5 years before but they still have some weight and you can get some extra benefit in ranking & traffic.
Suppose (by developer mistake) you are using two title tags in your website, in that case Google will pick first one and ignore others. But you should always keep single title tag on the web page because Google may consider as spam or Google may confuse.
There are two case studies about multiple meta tag
People sometime misguide to Google by using different title tag from the original content that’s why Google pick relevant title according to the search query. It can pick it from headings, sub-headings, bold, italic text or content.
Sometime your sub-heading is more relevant with the query and Google love to show this for better user experience.
Google already have given their input about this question. Google said – Title tag and heading tag (H1) should not be exact same but should be similar or very close.
